Why Faith Feels Like My Secret Superpower
I grew up Catholic.. my grandpa was even a deacon. We did all the things: religious ed, CCD, confirmation, first communion… all that jazz. And to be totally honest? I thought it was boring. I remember trying to stay awake in church, watching VeggieTales during religious ed, and eventually becoming one of those families that only went to church on Easter and Christmas (if that).
I had friends who went to other churches and had much different experiences, which gave me hope. But in college, when I tried out a few new churches, I still felt like the odd one out. I didn’t know anything, and honestly I was more interested in being social than really learning.
Fast forward: after college, my husband and I started going to church every once in a while - maybe once or twice a month. We enjoyed it, but sleeping in was still the priority. We liked it, we learned more than either of us ever had growing up, but it still wasn’t a lifestyle. Then we moved states, and suddenly finding a church was back at the bottom of our list. We tried a few, but everything felt forced.
Until we found our current church.
Within one service I learned more about God and Jesus than I had in the previous 30 years. No, seriously - I wish I was kidding. A few weeks later, I got sick, ended up hospitalized, and it was in that lowest moment that God really met me.
How Faith Has Changed Me
I used to roll my eyes at “hardcore Christians.” Growing up Catholic, I felt judged for wearing jeans or just being myself, rather than encouraged to build a relationship with God. It felt fake and forced.
But now? I kind of get it. God has completely changed my life. The way I view life. The way I navigate life. The way I work, rest, and dream. It’s hard not to be passionate about something that’s truly life-changing.
But let’s be honest. It’s not like everything is perfect now - far from it. Life is probably actually harder now because I have this new standard. But it’s SO WORTH IT, and it's given me:
A bigger picture perspective. I trust Him through my chronic illness, through uncertainty, and through the curveballs life throws.
More peace. I still get anxious, but I don’t stay there. Faith grounds me fast.
Freedom from approval-chasing. For years I lived for the opinions of others - family, bosses, friends, customers. Now, the only opinion that truly matters is His. And let me tell you, that takes so much pressure off.
Practical strength in business and life. I pray over my work, hard conversations, and big decisions. And I’ve learned: God’s got me, but I still have to act. He’s not going to drop the results in my lap.
My Faith in Everyday Life
I wish I could say I’m a Bible scholar. I’m not (work in progress 🙋♀️). But here’s what faith looks like for me day-to-day:
Prayer. Constantly. Over big stuff and dumb little stuff. In the car, in the shower, before bed, before meetings. And you best believe before every single embroidery order because what can go wrong will go wrong.
Church & Serving. It’s now just a normal part of life for us.
Community. Small groups and friendships have made the biggest difference.
Worship. We listen to mostly worship music now, and it’s shifted the atmosphere of our home in the best way.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about showing up and letting Him into the small stuff.
If You’re Curious About Faith
It doesn’t have to look dramatic. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need to know all the answers (spoiler: no one does).
Think of it like a fitness or health journey: it’s not always easy, but it’s simple and so worth it.
If you’re curious, just start somewhere:
Pray (literally just start talking to God).
Order a study Bible - Amazon has a ton.
Visit a church (and “shop around” until you find your vibe).
Go to a Christian concert or event (you know we love Forest Frank in this house).
Join a small group.
Start wherever feels least scary. It’ll probably feel clunky and weird at first, but it’s also incredibly freeing.
Final Thoughts
Faith isn’t about rules, or being “hardcore,” or living up to a standard. It’s about a relationship that brings peace, purpose, and joy into every area of life.
And if you’re wondering.. no, you’re not too late, too far behind, or too messy.
Start where you are. God meets us there.
