Healthy Habits While Running a Business

If you’ve started a business, you’re probably competitive, driven, and want more for your life. You’re chasing freedom, fulfillment, and that next level. And somewhere in that mix, you realize your health has to rise with your standards.. because you simply can’t pour from an empty cup.

But let’s be real, running a business while prioritizing health is no small task. It’s a constant juggling act. Still, I’ve learned that when I feel my best physically, I perform my best professionally. I’m sharper, more creative, and far more productive.

The Misconception

From the outside, people assume business owners are either swimming in free time or wealthy enough to outsource everything. The truth? Unless you’re in it, you don’t realize how unpredictable and demanding entrepreneurship can be. Our schedules don’t fit neatly into 9-5s. Some days start early, some nights run late, and often, there’s no real “off” button.

That flexibility can be a blessing - or an excuse.

The Challenges

Health can easily take a backseat when business gets busy. For me, it’s the late nights that throw off my mornings, or those days when I didn’t plan meals ahead and end up ordering takeout. It’s easy to justify skipping the gym or staying glued to my laptop because there’s “so much to do.”

But over time, I’ve realized that neglecting my health only hurts my business. I can’t think clearly, I burn out faster, and I start feeling drained in every way.

Habits That Help Me Stay Grounded

There’s no perfect routine, but these habits have made the biggest difference:

  • Walking every day: outside if I can, or with my treadmill desk if not. It’s simple, but it resets my brain and body.

  • Staying hydrated: I always have water within reach.

  • Scheduling my workout classes: even if it’s later in the day. It’s non-negotiable.

  • Standing and moving more: using a standing desk keeps me from sitting for hours on end.

  • Prioritizing sleep: I’ve learned the hard way that less sleep does not equal more productivity.

Creating Boundaries

I try to start my day with me time before diving into work. If I open my laptop too soon, I get pulled into that momentum and it’s hard to stop. My husband and I also make it a point to eat dinner together most nights. It’s our little reminder to pause, breathe, and connect - even if the day’s been crazy.

Health and Business Go Hand-in-Hand

For a long time, I thought I had to pick one: build a business or focus on my health. But I’ve learned that was just a justification. The two are deeply connected. The same mindset that pushes you to grow your business (discipline, consistency, resilience) is the same mindset that builds better health.

When I’m at my worst health-wise, I’m almost always struggling in business too. But when I’m moving, sleeping, eating well, and spending time in prayer, everything flows better.

Simple Ways to Start

You don’t have to overhaul your life. Start small:

  • Keep water at your desk.

  • Pack your lunch ahead of time.

  • Stand up during calls.

  • Take a walk break instead of scrolling.

  • See if your office setup supports movement.

  • Ask yourself where you can add “micro improvements.”

Whatever your workday looks like, find little ways to move and care for yourself. It adds up faster than you think.

Running a business is hard, but taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be. Sometimes the best “strategy” isn’t working harder - it’s taking a walk, drinking water, and remembering why you started.
